The Hidden World on Your Feet – How Microbes Influence Nail and Skin Health

WHAT ARE MICROBES?

 

Microbes are tiny living organisms invisible to the naked eye. They include:

Beneficial bacteria

Harmful bacteria

Fungi (including yeasts and dermatophytes)

Viruses

Microscopic mites

 

Our skin naturally hosts billions of these organisms. On healthy feet, they usually live together in balance. Problems arise when harmful microbes begin to dominate or when the skin's natural barrier becomes damaged.

 

WHY FEET ARE A PERFECT HOME FOR MICROBES?

 

Feet provide an ideal environment because they are:

Warm

Moist

Often enclosed in shoes for many hours

redness

swelling

pain

pus formation

infection

 

Other dermatophytes or Human Papilloma Virus can cause nails ingrowing also.

 

Prompt treatment can often prevent a minor problem becoming a much more painful one.

 

CALLUS – MORE THAN JUST HARD SKIN

 

Many people think callus is simply extra skin.

 

In reality, callus develops because the skin is protecting itself from excessive pressure or friction.

 

Although microbes do not directly cause callus they can accelerate rate of growing. Therefor, if pathogens involved,  reducing number of them is crucial.

Thick callused skin also can:

trap moisture

develop tiny cracks

allow bacteria and fungi to enter

increase the risk of infection

 

If callus becomes very thick, it can also hide small wounds underneath, particularly in people with diabetes or poor circulation.

 

Regular professional removal and pressure management are often the safest solution.

 

CRACKED HEELS.

 

Dry skin and cracked heels may appear harmless, but deep fissures create open doorways for bacteria.

Once bacteria enter these cracks, they may cause:

pain

inflammation

infection

delayed healing

 

Keeping the skin moisturised and reducing pressure on the heels can greatly reduce these risks.

 

ATHLETE'S FOOT.

 

Athlete's foot is one of the most common fungal infections affecting the feet.

Symptoms include:

itching

peeling skin

redness

burning sensation

cracked skin, particularly between the toes

 

Without treatment, fungal infections may spread to the toenails, making treatment longer and more challenging.

 

FOOT ODOUR.

 

Many people blame sweat for unpleasant foot odour.

 

In fact, fresh sweat has very little smell.

 

The odour develops when bacteria feed on sweat and dead skin cells, producing strong-smelling compounds.

 

Good hygiene, breathable footwear and regular sock changes help keep bacterial populations under control.

 

CORNS


Corns develop because of repeated pressure over small areas.

Although microbes do not cause corns, damaged skin surrounding them may become infected if patients attempt to cut them at home.

 

Using sharp instruments without proper training can introduce bacteria into the skin and lead to serious complications.

 

VERRUCAS

 

Verrucas are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), not by bacteria or fungi.

 

They spread through direct contact, especially in warm, damp environments such as swimming pools, leisure centres and communal showers.

 

Many disappear naturally, while others require treatment.

Trimming nails straight across where appropriate.

Seeking professional advice if nails become thick, painful or change colour.

Never ignoring persistent redness, swelling or discharge.
